Further examples are shown below of the landscape changes resulting from the reorganisation of field systems through the process of enclosure, and documentation relating to the costs incurred
Alne Transformed
The township of Alne was subject to an enclosure award of 18 June 1811 made under an act of 1807.
Before Enclosure: The map below of Alne’s open fields, dated 1795, shows the system of arable cultivation before enclosure [M/5]. Fields were cultivated in common with each proprietor having a number of strips in each field. Alne had over 2300 separate strips of land.
Enclosure in 1811: The enclosure awarded each proprietor a block or blocks of land in accordance with their rights in the open field. The map below of Alne following the enclosure in 1811 shows the enormous impact of such an enclosure upon the landscape [I/PR/ALN].
